Growing Radishes

Posted by: Scott 07/18/2021

Radishes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow, and they are a great vegetable for young gardeners, because they grow quick and are usually ready to harvest in just 30 days. Radishes are a cool season crop, so here in North Florida, we grow them from September to March. There are so many great ways to enjoy radishes, that they deserve a spot in your garden.

How to plant radishes

Radishes will grow in a container with at least 8 inches of soil, and also grow well planted outside. They seem to do well in our sandy soil but adding soil improvements like compost will help retain moisture. The rule of thumb for planting any seed is to plant the seed at a depth that is equal to the longest side of the seed. Radishes are about 1/8 of an inch round, so you would need to plant the radish at 1/8 of an inch deep.

What we like to do is sprinkle the seeds about 3 inches apart on top of the soil. Then we take our hand and rub the seeds into the soil. Be sure that the seeds make good contact with the soil, and if needed you can sprinkle a little bit more soil on top of the seeds to make them 1/8 of an inch deep.

Keep your seeds consistently moist until they sprout, if you have a problem with them drying out you can place some light mulch, or a container over them to help retain moisture. They do not need light to germinate. It should only take a few days for your radish seeds to germinate at which time you can remove any coverings, and thin seedlings to 3 inches apart. Water your radishes regularly and check their progress daily.

Harvesting

In about 30 days you should have radishes ready to harvest, store them in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. These vegetables are versatile in the kitchen, and incredibly easy to grow in the garden.
